| September 2, 1999 Hey everyone, Well finally getting around to catching up on the website and such. I actually haven't had time to get on this machine at home lately. With college starting back I've been on a computer for about 10 hours a day for the last two weeks (except of course the golf course on the weekends). That coupled with the fact that I have been in the process of acquiring a new(used) vehicle (I guess that would be a different vehicle) for my son since the big wreck. He is doing fine but is going to have to have nose surgery in about 6 months (seems his proboscis took the brunt of the impact). All his cuts and bruises healed in about 3 days (oh to be young again, I get a cut on my hand or arm and it takes about 3 weeks to heal). Anyway we feel very fortunate that is wasn't worse. Welcome David Taylor to our email list. He sent in his Where are they now form and I just got it posted. I love his email address; storkdrt@aol.com. Very creative David. Nothing personal David, but I hope I don't need you or anyone in your profession again, although seeing my kids born was the neatest thing I have ever done (My whole family just knew I would pass out). MSS and Susie went to lunch with Sue Anne and Sue Ellen last week. We are going to try to get together and have lunch before Sue Anne leaves. I'm sure she is in misery with the heat here as opposed to Alaska. Sue Anne is here because her father is in poor health but I don't know why Sue Ellen is here. MSS didn't tell me. We are all glad that John Miller made it through the freak tornado in Salt Lake City. His wife Karen was right downtown in the middle of it but she was okay. I thought all they had up there were Salt slides?? I have procured the website bhs1969.com and as soon as the opportunity arises I will be switching all the stuff over. I am going to try to get the Daily Astonisher (that would be the Batesville Guard) to do an article about our class, the website and the positive effect that modern technology has had on reuniting old friends and classmates. Speaking of the new website, we have had several send money in to fund the site and several more volunteer to send. If you wish to help please send your hard earned money to: Martha Sue Newsom-Smith (or MSS) 3191 Anna Batesville, AR 72501 We are trying to raise at least $480 to fund it for the first 2 years hoping that by that time it will cost less to host a website. If you send at least $20 you can be sponsor of the month (Won't you be proud? I know we will be proud of you) My wife and I played golf last weekend with Edie Williams-Allen (class of 70) and her husband Kenny (class of 66). They live in Walnut Ridge and she is the principal of Pocahontas K-2 school. We had a good time with them and informed them of all the goings on here in the big city. I would like to start putting some news about you guys/girls on here. I know I am pretty boring and run out of topics. Everyone wants to know what everyone else is doing. So send me that email and tell me what you are up to these days. Rumor has it that Linda Creech-Moser will be acquiring a computer at home in the near future. Will keep you posted. Till next time, Peace John September 5, 1999 Hey classmates, Just a short note to inform you of a new page on our website. I have gotten several responses from yall' and am sharing them on a page I call "Classmate Chat". It is located here: http://www.bhs1969.com/bhs/Chat.htm There is also a link on the BHS Class of 69 homepage called of all things "Classmate Chat". I will post the latest at the top of the page. Please send me an email about your life and what's going on and I will post it here to share with the class. It is interesting to know what everyone is doing and the juicer the story the better.(Isn't that human nature?) Well enjoy the page (I did it in large type so you don't have to get the bifocals out to see). I'm off to the golf course. Peace, John September 9, 1999 Hey Hey, It's me again. Catching everyone up on the website progress. I am in the process of moving all the content to our new address: http://www.bhs1969.com The official date will be Oct 1 for the new address. Money has been coming in but not quite as fast as the promises. Like to acknowledge Nancy Burdick $20, Jack Sharp $50 and Vaughn Blue $20. Thanks a bunch you guys, we now have funds to operate for a while.Okay now that the snide dunn is over I'll try to catch you up on the news about town. Been fairly quite around here. For those of you that knew him, Savoy Montgomery died this past weekend. He was working at the American Motor Inn when our family leased it in 1967. He was quite a guy. I worked many hours with him and he told me endless stories about Batesville and the people there. He walked everywhere. He had been a chauffeur for Mr. Nels Barnett in the 30's & 40's yet he didn't own a car until 1972 when he bought a brand new 1972 Ford LTD. I'm glad I knew him. Haven't heard about the progress on Danny's Lockhouse Restaurant. Maybe Danny will read this and email me?? Things are going well here, got my daughter back in college (the house is much cleaner now), my son's nose is doing okay and we have him in another vehicle (with some new conditions for driving) and I am starting my year-end charge to try to make the Arkansas State Golf Association Cup Team. (One has to finish in the top 10 based on a point system for finishes in designated tournaments) As you could guess I'm am one of the elder members of the team. If you care, the standings are posted here: http://www.asga.org/poy99/men.htm . So I'm headed to Pine Bluff for the next couple of weekends. If I do good you will probably hear about it from me (if I do bad I'll pretend I never mentioned this).Sue Anne is still here but we haven't done the lunch thing. MSS says next week. Haven't heard from Kinky but we know he is spending most every night building on his retirement home at the lake. I'm not sure he is even checking his email. He hasn't called or anything (am I hurt?) MSS said my cousin Nan has order a computer and is soon to be a Cyberclassmate. I am kind of surprised that we haven't heard from other classmates lately. Maybe this winter when everyone is holed up in the cold (except some Californians where it never gets cold) we will hear from them. Got a note from Patsy Lee-Gibson and she is headed for the Florida Keys for a couple of weeks. I started to post it to the new Classmate Chat page ( http://www.bhs1969.com/bhs/Chat.htm) but it was only a one liner, she says she will tell us all about it upon her return 9/22. Everyone seems to be enjoying the new page. Send me some Chat!! If you haven't noticed I also put a new page on that has the BHS Football record since 1922 (http://www.bhs1969.com/bhs/footballrecord.htm) .Speaking of BHS, my wife and I made our last trip to BHS open house since our son is a SR this year. Kind of sad in a way. Gosh the time went fast. Seems like only yesterday we were taking them to their first day of school. I better change the subject before I get too syrupy on you.(Syrupy is from the TV show Gunsmoke, meaning to get emotional , does anyone know which character used it?) Well I'm going to go lay up in bed and watch Seinfeld. Peace, John September 14, 1999
Hey there, Well I have a corruption to make. Nancy Burdick sent in $25 not $20. Sorry about that Nancy but you know how 2nd hand information can sometimes be misinterpreted. Thanks for the dough. A strange thing happened this weekend while I was gone. I came home Saturday night to find a $20 bill clothespinned to my ceiling fan in the living room. Seems Grant Williams was in town (and in my house) and from the note left his $20 for the class website. Thanks Grant, sorry I missed you. Speaking of being gone, as you may recall I went to Pine Bluff to play in a golf tournament. Well the results were not what I wanted I finished 11th. Had a bad golf day Saturday but played better Sunday. On the way home Sunday I was coming down the mountain by the rest area on HWY 167 and these people in front of me in a Ford Taurus begin to throw trash out the window. Everyone has their pet peeves and mine is littering. Ever since I saw the commercial with the Indian (his name is Iron Eyes Cody) paddling down the stream litter with all kinds of trash, I have joined the ranks of the anti-litter people. So I start honking my horn and giving them the shame on you with the forefingers. They were completely oblivious to my antics. So I'm thinking Citizens Arrest (ala Gomer Pyle). I get home and call the Sheriff's department but much to my dismay and chagrin it is only if the police see them. I gave them the licensee number anyway and told them to write them a letter. Okay got that off my chest. Congratulations to Vaughn Blue who correctly identified Festus as the Gunsmoke character that used syrupy in his vocabulary. Vaughn also pointed out that the day I sent the email was the day Gunsmoke debuted on TV in 1955. Well have to close now and go to work. John September 20, 1999
Hey CM, It's early Monday morning and I'm off to work shortly. I figured out how all those people get up so early. Go to bed at 9 p.m.! I was worn out this weekend commuting to Pine Bluff for another golf tournament. Finished tied for 9th up a couple of notches from last weekend. I need to do better. Golf is like everything else - MENTAL! I got in a bit of trouble because I didn't answer the cell phone on the way home. My wife called and I didn't answer. The trouble was that I had the stereo up so loud I couldn't hear the thing ringing (think I was in the middle of "In the year 2525"). I need a phone with a flashing red light so I can still turn it up and sing. At least there were a couple of little girls riding in the back seat of a Volvo (which faces the rear) that enjoyed my singing. They gave me the Peace sign. As I was singing and coming home I got to wondering about something. Becky Ford-Doster sent her profile ( http://www.bhs1969.com/bhs/whatare.htm) and her husband Dan is an Opera singer. Hey Becky, why do they sing in a foreign language or do they always do that? Is it Italian? I thought you might enlighten us culturally deprived about Opera (since the only Opera most of us know is the Grand Ole and I think the spelling is different).I was also wondering about this writing style I use (you know with the parentheses). Is it called anything or is it something I just made up. Any English majors out there??? Got an email from Danny D and he is breaking ground on the new restaurant. He got past City Hall and all the red tape. Hey Danny I noticed that in the artist rendering of the place there is a deck which appears to hang out on the river. Kinky and I were wondering if you could smoke on the deck outside? Gonna have a drive through window (you want Garlic on that Pasta?)? Well you know the new stoplight at 20th & Harrison? As suspicioned (another Festus word) there was a big pileup last week. A five car rear end type crash. Luckily no one was hurt too bad and no tickets were issued (although I'm sure some Lawyers will find somebody at fault, the one with the newest car; no offense Steven). Look for many more to come. I cut through behind Tommy's to avoid the light now. Seems safer. Becky Ford-Doster pointed out in her profile that her parents have never had an accident backing out on Harrison Street. I was quite impressed. Does that go for you and Ronald too Becky? The profile page that I mentioned previously is getting quite large. There are currently 29 classmates and it takes about 3 minutes to load (on a modem). I am going to change the format and break it up into sections kind of like the Senior Pictures. If you haven't filled out the form ( http://www.bhs1969.com/bhs/whatareform.htm) please do so, everyone is nosy and wants to know what you are up to these days. I would also like to get a current photo so we can have a then and now picture. Send those photos to me! I you have one on your computer just attach it an email or I can scan it if you send a hardcopy. My address is 2125 Duffer Lane.Hi ho, hi ho it's off to work I go. Peace, John
